Abstract
The chapter examines cultural transfer as a feature of the Zionist movement in interwar Yugoslavia as part of a broader Europe-wide political project. It identifies and explains the ways in which the connections between the European Zionists and the Yugoslav Zionists resulted in various forms of cultural transfer to the Yugoslav Jewish community, primarily in the domain of political and national identity and self-understanding. By examining the role of Jewish periodicals and Zionist youth organizations, including individuals who were instrumental to their work, the article demonstrates how a minority national movement may provide fertile ground for cultural transfer, even without significantly impacting the dominant culture in which the minority finds itself or without nation-states playing a prominent role in said transfer.
